TECHNICAL QUESTIONS: Ask for Laura DiGiulio, ext. 102 or for Beth Risinger, ext. 104. the timing of setting a December 2009 deadline for the new accord is not the worst of news. Actually, it allows climate change and the public demand for the reduction of emissions to come to the forefront of the grand political stage. The sheer timing alone has granted the cause of fighting global warming a public relations dream—nonstop free publicity from the mouths of political campaigns from both sides of the aisle. Whoever wins the election and takes the seat at the table in Copenhagen in December 2009 will be well aware of the importance of writing and following an effective, progressive accord. The days of American passivity toward the subject of climate change has passed. Again, the world is changing. Green is again winning. Creating environmentally sound, sustainable blueprints for the operations of a nation is not a decision to mull and compromise as a result of a political ideology, but rather done so as a result of the demands of the people. The Green Economy UN Secretary-General Ban Kimoon likened the events at Bali to the beginning of a “Green economy.” While many have focused on climate change as indeed a looming threat, it is also a lucrative business opportunity as well. He discussed the economic opportunities that now sit and wait for those who wish to create a business plan that incorporates reducing emissions or contributing to the fight against climate change. But, we already know this. We have discussed the economic benefits of being a Green business for some time now. All who have been working toward the Greening of their buildings through specific processes and operations are already ahead of the curve. The great news here is that it is being broadcasted, embraced, and practiced on an even greater, global scale. More of our customers, suppliers, and service providers are becoming aware. Our demand is escalating at a level we perhaps never imagined. As the Bali roadmap is not perfect and has its flaws, it is still a much bigger victory in the fight against global warming than any of us would have imagined six months ago. The signing of the agreement was a testimony that the fight is on, not only against carbon emissions, but also against the passive, shrug of the shoulders, low-expectations attitude toward this mind-boggling predicament. Then again, we are still creating the map. We have yet to witness the actual crossing from where we sit at the present to where we need to be. But, it is still another sign that the global leaders have acknowledged that this is the issue we need to face, as the human race, and in the end, find the most valid compromise no matter our economic or political influences. For building managers, executive housekeepers, supervising custodial staff, and any decision maker relating to the operation of a business structure, the time has never been more opportune to ride the wave of Green and use it to foster your success. W A 26+-year veteran of the cleaning industry, Stephen P. Ashkin is a tireless advocate for envionmentallypreferable cleaning.
