Executive Housekeeping Today - March 2008 - (Page 16) executIve ProFIle (continued from previous page) in charge of maintaining all the public areas of the zoo, including the buildings of indoor animal exhibits, and taking care of the clean up and tear down for scheduled events at the zoo, such as corporate events, wedding receptions, and private parties. The team does not clean the actual animal enclosures, as this is something that must be done by animal program staff for safety reasons. During the summer months, most of the full-time staff members start their days at 4:00 a.m. in order to prepare the park for opening at 9:30 a.m. During the winter months, the park opens at 10:00 a.m. There is also an additional shift that is comprised of mostly seasonal crew members that help out during the summer months, and two full-time staff members who start their day at 10:00 a.m. and work until 6:15 p.m. when the park closes. “I like being able to help my crew members achieve their own levels of professional success,” says Chromzack. “Whether it is through encouraging them to go back to school or providing the training needed so they can reach their full Tim Chromzack speaks with his staff (pictured from left to right) Felipa Gonzalez, senior custodian; Ruth Navarro, senior custodian; and Rocio Taboada, lead custodian, in the Habitat Africa! The Savannah exhibit. potential, I am always happy to help my team.” Due to being an advocate of and participating in continuing education himself, Chromzack makes sure that his staff is continually trained and educated in order to ensure the zoo is well-maintained. The zoo itself provides an excellent training program through the Human Resources Department called “Zoo University.” Throughout the year, managers and supervisors are required to take classes, but there are also a wide variety of classes that are available to all staff if their managers approve. Recently, Chromzack also worked with another plant and facilities manager to develop a supervisor training class, which consists of 24 sessions. Along with these classes, the custodial department holds refresher courses on washroom cleaning, hard floor care, and proper equipment usage and maintenance on a regular basis. The custodial department is also required to take a half-day customer service training session annually. In addition, Chromzack recently turned the task of team building over to his crew members. “I could not be more proud of them in seeing how professionally they interact with each other; team building is a process I feel is going to be very successful,” says Chromzack.
