Executive Housekeeping Today - March 2008 - (Page 17) an ongoing basis. “I see a greater emphasis in the next few years on the use of Green cleaning products and I feel this is a trend a long time coming,” says Chromzack. “I also feel that it is equally important for end users of Green products to do their homework and make sure that the company supplying them with Green cleaning products are being Green in the production and packaging of the products they are selling.” Challenges and Advice Emma Crowder, senior custodian, cleaning in Nyani Lodge, one of Brookfield Zoo’s restaurants sure for participating with other departments in the zoo to go to a centralized purchasing process. Through this process, the custodial department utilizes software which enables supervisors to point and click on the items they need and it is then sent to Chromzack for approval. Through joint purchases, they receive their items at a discounted rate due to the volume involved. Another aspect that Chromzack is proud to say he spearheaded is in the area of community partnerships, where he worked with the zoo’s Education Department in an effort to employ adults with learning disabilities. In 2007, he also served as the project manager of the temporary Stingray Bay exhibit, where he oversaw all aspects of the infrastructure construction necessary for the exhibit (including electrical, plumbing, sewer/water, gas), as related issues with the ray pool, life support system, tent, and deck. Besides implementing new ideas, the zoo and Chromzack’s department also keep up with the latest trends. The Chicago Zoological Society is a big supporter of the Green Movement—the zoo is a conservation park and has been using environmentally-friendly products for years. The custodial department’s cleaning products use a dispensing method that is designed to lower the use of water and lessen the waste released into the environment. The toilet tissue and paper products they use are a minimum total recycled content of 95 percent. The zoo also continues to investigate and evaluate environmentally-friendly products on Since the zoo is open all year round, the biggest challenge that Chromzack finds within his department is maintaining the facility during the winter months. “We have a wonderful event during the holiday season called ‘Holiday Magic,’ where our park is lit up with lights,” says Chromzack. “There are many activities for our guests to do, and with that comes the clean-up of snow, slush, and salt being tracked into our buildings and restaurants.” During the colder winter (continued on next page) Ramona Lopez, senior custodian, cleans the window in the Nearshore Waters tank at The Living Coast.
