During the winter months, the zoo offers a service free-of-charge to transport guests around the park. This spring, the zoo will be opening The Pavilions, a new venue for catered events, located inside the park, as well as breaking ground for the new Great Bear Wilderness exhibit, scheduled to open in 2009. “As you can see we have many cleaning challenges and opportunities ahead of us!” says Chromzack. One way that Chromzack deals with the challenges within his position is by using the 447 Cleaning Times handbook he purchased through I.E.H.A. a few years Rocio Taboada, lead custodian, cleans the windows in the Seven Seas underwater viewing gallery. back. “I find these guidelines to be invaluable when rearranging work areas or when a new facility is opened,” says Chromzack. “It is one of the best tools I have seen when it comes to implementing efficiency in workplace productivity.” Another piece of advice Chromzack recommends to other managers of housekeeping departments is to read your copy of Executive Housekeeping Today each month from cover to cover. “Some of the articles within EHT are review information and some of them are new; but it is all interesting to read,” Nicole Antol, assistant custodian, cleans around The Swamp exhibit that houses two alligators. says Chromzack. “It is the best way I know to stay in touch with what the industry is doing. Once I am done reading the magazine, I route it to my supervisors to read.” Chromzack has been an I.E.H.A. member for the past 26 years, and is always encouraging others around him to become members. In fact, two years ago, he encouraged one of his supervisors to become certified through I.E.H.A. and she did. “I receive so much valuable information through this organization, it is irreplaceable,” says Chromzack. “Being a member is the best way I know of to stay in touch with industry trends and to stay well-versed regarding new products and equipment on the market.” W Tim Chromzack is Manager of Custodial Services for Plant and Facilities with the Chicago Zoological Society at Brookfield Zoo in Brookfield, IL.
