An idea is to give each of those people something tangible to take with them to the office or home—a way for them to remember you, and you to count your amount of impressions (more on this later). Track, Measure, and Evaluate Delivering Your Messages When your goals, strategies, and messages are all in line, decide what channels and media you will use as a vehicle to broadcast your campaign. Think of your logistics as well. If your table will be outside, messages delivered over a computer monitor would not be the best idea. If you will set up a table in your building’s atrium, perhaps you would not want to give away Frisbees! A nicely packaged CDRom with information on reduced utilities spending, thanks to your Green cleaning program, would be great for upper-level building executives, but would it be for students? Those hosting a larger Earth Day celebration may want to look into free PR opportunities via radio, television, or print media. Which will work best for you and help you meet your goals and objectives? When you are considering giveaways and promotional products, avoid the trap of putting all your effort into having the “coolest” item. Keep these to a minimum— they can indeed be an effective tool, but be careful. Be sure to choose “Green” items that are regularly useful around the home or office. Tree saplings, seeds, hand sanitizer, kitchen gizmos, and reusable shopping bags are all good ideas, and the list continues to grow of items that are created in a Green manner and can be used time and again. And, don’t forget to discuss your plans with your vendors and ask if they have any freebies you could give away. Be sure to set a timetable to ensure nothing gets overlooked. Create checklists and make sure you designate who will be responsible for what and at what time. This will be rather easy, your staff will most likely enjoy being a part of something special, and doing something different with their time on the job. But, it will be easy to overlook something important while you are still busy tending to your daily responsibilities. Simple things like checklists and timelines will help you avoid something falling through the cracks. To finish your campaign outline, make a budget for yourself and make sure you fall within it. Your budget might be limited, lucrative, or nothing. The key is to do the best you can. As always, shoot for the biggest bang for your buck—use cost-effective strategies and tools. You may need to revisit elements of your plan after reviewing and calculating your budget. Finally, set a means of measurement to evaluate your Earth Day campaign. Are there ways to measure your effectiveness? You may find when you think of ways to evaluate how well your plan worked, you may think of more effective ways to reach your target audiences. Remember this: You and your experience in the Green Movement are more important than any promotional item. Enjoy taking a day off from your role as an executive housekeeper and embrace spending the day as an educator, promoter, expert in your field, and spokesperson for the Green Movement. You have earned it. W A 26+-year veteran of the cleaning industry, Stephen P.
