Taking time to have a quality orientation program that stresses the values and culture of the organization will enhance the probability of a smoother transition from their previous position to the new position. • Follow up: Spend time outside the formal orientation process and training to see how the new employee is doing at the relational level in the organization. Do they feel like they belong? Are there any values that you need to explain? Are there questions about the decision-making culture? Organizations tend to operate at different speeds, and this can be frustrating to a new employee, especially if he or she is used to either making decisions or being provided decisions in a rapid fashion. If the decision-making process is slow, explain why it is that way to the new employee and help her or him to navigate the decision-making process in a meaningful and less stressful manner. Expending significant time and effort on defining and explaining the culture of the organization can be rewarding and will assist in retaining new employees and ensuring a win-win situation for employer as well as employee. Jen Lund stated that top performing companies with a strong culture report a widespread impact of their culture such as: • A greater degree of employee alignment to goals; • Increased employee commitment/engagement; • Positive public perception of company brand; • Greater ease of recruitment; and • Increased retention of top performers. Oftentimes, orientation and new employee training programs overlook the importance of organizational culture. Minimizing the potential impact of an organization’s culture, and not stressing the importance of the integration of the new employee into the culture, maximizes the potential for a failure in the hiring process. The prudent manager of today will integrate the culture and values of the organization into every aspect of the hiring process and into all daily operations.
