This is reinforced by a U.S. Department of Energy Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on HighPerformance and Sustainable Buildings. This MOU between 19 agencies commits the participants to use sustainable guidelines when designing buildings. If you wish to learn more about the U.S. Department of Energy initiatives, you can visit their Web site at: http://hss. energy.gov/pp/leed.html. In our operations, we use significant quantities of water and energy, and paying attention to that consumption can have an impact on the bottom line. The proper use of chemicals that are Green or environmentally-friendly, as certified by an independent testing program, ensures that we do not detract from indoor air quality issues, while we maintain the buildings at an acceptable level of cleanliness. Such chemicals not only have less impact on the environment, these chemicals are also safer for employees to use and cause fewer allergic reactions for employees and building occupants. Sustainability Programs Programs that encourage the sustainability of our resources and the environment are here to stay. Responsible stewardship mandates that we work together towards these critical goals. To develop such a program by oneself would seem to present an insurmountable challenge; however, there are many good programs already in existence: • Cornell University has an excellent Web page that outlines Cornell’s “Sustainable Campus” while “Promoting sustainable futures and advancing Cornell’s mission,” at http://www.sustainablecampus. cornell.edu/. • Michigan State University (www.ecofoot.msu.edu/environmental.htm) explains, in detail, in MSU’s “Campus Sustainability Report,” their method and measures for tracking innumerable environmental indicators. • The Sustainable Development Gateway provides access to over 1,200 documents that address sustainability topics at: http://sdgateway.net/. • The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) provides a wealth of information about sustainable programs, practices, and procedures at: http://www. aashe.org/index.php. • The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Division of Sustainability Development, provides a world view of sustainability programs at: http://www.un.org/esa/sustdev/ about_us/aboutus.htm, Back in the 1960s, Jim Henson and Kermit made a song famous about being Green. Since that time, the term “Green” has taken on a different meaning and a different definition that encourages us to get involved; to make the planet in which we live safer and healthier; to develop a sustainable environment for ourselves and generations to come; and to ensure that what we consume today will not deplete or destroy what is available for our descendents to enjoy. There is no doubt that if we take sustainability to its highest level, we will be singing in a resounding chorus with Kermit and Jim Henson, “I am green and it’ll do fine, it’s beautiful!
