Executive Housekeeping Today - May 2008 - (Page 8) FrUgal (continued from previous page) hance and enrich individuals and organizations. The American Management Association (www.amanet.org) provides a list of steps that a manager can take to break down silos in an organization and these have been paraphrased as follows: • Close communication gaps: Managers need to be conscious that the messages they generate are the same messages that have been received by the person listening to the message. Take a few moments to extend oneself to determine if messages are really being received with the meanings intended. • Reward collaborative and cooperative behavior: Take a few moments to recognize persons on your team who seek to collaborate with others on your team and other teams. Foster collaboration and cooperation. • Encourage innovation: Always try to develop an atmosphere where innovation is rampant and ask questions such as: Why do we do it this way? How can we do it better? What ways do you think we could do it better? Watch how other departments handle similar functions such as yours. How do they perform the function better? What can you learn from them? • Search out opportunities for cross-functional initiatives: Sit down with the peers in your organization and discuss how departments can work together to produce enhanced end results. This networking can be incredibly effective and powerful. Try to see what you do through the eyes of others. Compare notes and bridge the gaps of understanding through sharing and interaction. However, providing a prescriptive list of steps may not identify or resolve the deeper issues. Angela Drummond, President and CEO of SiloSmashers, suggests a series of questions that individuals and organizations can ask to help resolve the issues of silos, and to move from silos to collaboration: • Does your organizational structure promote collaboration or do silos exist? • Do you have collaboration in your culture and as a part of your value system? • Do you have the infrastructure for effective collaboration? • Do you believe in collaboration? • Do you model that belief? • Do you have a reward system for collaboration? There is no doubt that management experts and industry leaders agree that silos in an organization can be detrimental to individuals and organizations. Anything that we can do as facilities managers to break down these silos will enhance the organization’s effectiveness. Marcel Cite, writing for CAmagazine.com, stated: “Silos reduce efficiency Knocking down theses barriers can be an important contributor to value creation; and it will make way for sharing services, skills, and systems across units and will encourage best practices. Above all, it will also reduce unproductive tension in an organization.” Are we as facilities managers ready to release the energies and vitality of individuals and our organization by becoming silo busters? The challenge is to smash the silos today before the silos explode on us tomorrow. I.E.H.A. Board of Directors President—J. Darrel Hicks, R.E.H. (2-year term) ❖ St. Luke’s Hospital ❖ 232 S.
