Executive Housekeeping Today - June 2008 - (Page 16) executive Profile (continued from previous page) and accommodation. “We had two ‘white glove’ inspections a week that could not be failed. The standards were high and I thrived on that—I got the satisfaction in a job well done,” says McDougall. After leaving the off-shore industry, McDougall took the position as Assistant Manager in a family-run hotel, the Craighar Hotel in Dyce Aberdeen. She worked in the housekeeping department during the day, and in the restaurant and conference hall during lunchtime and evenings. A few years later, McDougall stumbled into the laundry industry and began working for Scotia Linen Services. For 13 years, she motivated and led from the front, but most importantly, was also one of the employees who made things happen. “I built a wonderful management team,” says McDougall. “We were all about the same age, and we all worked together, both men and women. I think my leadership skills are what have carried me through over the years.” McDougall believes strongly in John Adair’s management theory model, which she learned about during her college years, that includes the three core management responsibilities of business management—task, team, and individual. “I have always tended to be a focused person who really wants to know where, what, when, and why. I prefer to have a sound knowledge of the subject matter as a basis to build upon to enable me to perform to my full potential,” says McDougall. “I tend to be big on motivation, as I like to achieve the best out of my team. This takes some time to develop, as I need to work with each team member and look at the team’s overall current performance and ability first. In doing so, you get to know the indi- viduals behind the team and then it is easier to give recognition and praise and work to the individual’s strengths, and utilize these for the full benefit of the team itself. At this point, a great opportunity presents itself—you are at the level where you have the team’s confidence and can encourage them towards objectives and aims within the company’s procedures and policies,” she says. Besides her experience in the housekeeping, food service, and laundry industries, McDougall has spent about five years as the Scottish Secretary for the UKHA (United Kingdom Housekeepers Association). McDougall also enjoys her travels to the United States to attend the annual I.E.H.A. Conventions when she is able. “The trips to the USA are always highlights to all of us who cross the seas to join you all at the Conventions over the years. I have met so many friends and we still keep in touch,” says McDougall. “My life has been enriched by knowledge, friendships, and laughter, and I would just love to say ‘Hello’ to you all and thank you again for the years of good old-fashioned hospitality and friendship.” ATTENTION MEMBERS!
