Executive Housekeeping Today - June 2008 - (Page 2) executive corner All too often, people try to convince themselves that life will be better “later.” For example, we think that we will be happy after we get married and have children of our own. But then, we become frustrated and we think that we’ll be more content when our children aren’t so dependent upon us. After that, we’re frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. Then, we assume that we will be happy when they are finally out of the house. It’s too bad that we frequently tell ourselves that our life will be complete “later”— when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, when we’re able to go on that special vacation, or when we’re finally able to retire. But, the truth is, there’s no better time to be happy than right now! If not now, then when? Our lives will always be filled with challenges—why wait to be happy “later”? It’s best to admit this fact to yourself and make the decision to be happy now. I recently read a quote from Alfred D. Souza that said, “For a long time, it had seemed to me that life was just about to begin—REAL life. But there was always some obstacle a Happiness Now! standing in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still left to be served, a debt yet to be paid. Then life would begin. At last, it dawned on me that these ‘obstacles’ were my life.” This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to “get” to happiness—happiness is the way! So, treasure every moment that you have. And treasure it more because you share it with special people, special enough to spend your time with and remember that time waits for no one. So stop waiting until you find a new job or get that promotion that you’ve been hoping for; until you lose ten pounds or gain ten pounds; until you have kids or until your kids have grown up; until you start working or until you retire; until you get engaged or until you get married; until Friday night or until Sunday morning; until you get a new car or a new home; until summer or until winter; until your song comes on the radio, etc. Do not wait to decide—there is no better time to be happy than right now! Happiness is a journey, not a destination. Compass and Encompass INTERNATIONAL EXECUTIVE HOUSEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION, INC.
