However, there are certain occupations that present a greater hazard to employees—including physically demanding work, working with hazardous materials, and occupations that are inherently dangerous. Cleaning professionals are required to regularly perform physically demanding tasks which may present a risk if safe work practices are not followed. The hazards associated with custodial work range from chemical burns to eye injuries to strains, sprains, and broken bones. Most, if not all, hazards associated with custodial operations can be greatly reduced or completely eliminated by adhering to safe work practices while performing assigned job duties. The use of machinery and equipment are basic aspects of nearly all professional cleaning operations. Cleaning professionals may find themselves at the helm of several different types of potentially dangerous machines, including auto scrubbers, rotary floor or “swing” machines, high-speed buffers, vacuum cleaners, and carpet extractors. This equipment can present a hazard if not maintained and operated properly, and these Man vs. Machine: machine hazards fall into three primary types: mechanical, electrical, and noise. Mechanical Hazards Mechanical hazards are those associated with the machine’s moving parts. The critical areas of a machine are the point of operation and the power train.
