TECHNICAL QUESTIONS: Ask for Laura DiGiulio, ext. 102 or for Beth Risinger, ext. 104. laid-off from their blue-collar labor position. “The Green economy needs Ph.D.’s and Ph.-do’s,” says Van Jones, president of Green for All— an organization whose goal is to build an inclusive Green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty. “We need people who are highly educated at the theoretical level, and we need people who are highly educated at the level of skilled labor.” Aside from the sheer fact these efforts will help create a powerful retaliation against climate change, the social and economic benefits are multifold. These jobs are local—they cannot be outsourced overseas. Installing solar panels requires on-site labor. Retrofitting an office building for LEED standards is not something that can be done over the Internet from India. Also, these jobs promise a middleclass wage, many do not require a college education, and are going to be in high demand in urban, as well as rural communities. Also, executive housekeepers, please take note that the demand for experienced, management-level “Green-collar” employees is growing. Persons with an expertise in Green buildings, Green cleaning, and other Green job responsibilities are rare. Persons holding valuable experience in managing any of the aspects involved in an environmentally-sustainable building are becoming very marketable. Better yet, experience in supervising a labor force that initiated a Green cleaning program will be an impressive bullet point on a resume, or to use as a bargaining chip during a contract negotiation. Yet another reason to start your Green cleaning program now, if you haven’t already done so. So, this could be a very good time to ask yourself how much you enjoy embracing the Green movement. If you do enjoy your position as a Green cleaner and executive housekeeper, this is a time where you will find yourself very marketable. Also, if you are considering an advanced position or promotion, this is an excellent time to seek on-the-job-training in a similar, but escalated, position with higher wages. Employers will be looking to fill a countless array of positions—that dream job, if you don’t already have it. A Green collar job may be waiting for you!
