At the same time that I am feeling this anticipation and excitement, I am also feeling a bit of apprehension—not for the future of I.E.H.A., of course—but more so because I am leaving the leadership role. I don’t know what I’ll do when I look behind me and don’t see 3,800 people following! There are a few very notable achievements that occurred during my Presidency over the past two years that I am very proud of, and the synergy of the Board of Directors helped bring these accomplishments to fruition: • The EHT virtual magazine—a first in the industry. • Our affiliation with The Housekeeping Channel®, which is building the brand name of I.E.H.A. to a whole new audience. • Three new resource publications are being sold that are providing a stream of revenue for I.E.H.A.: Cleaning with Kip the Koala, a coloring book/story book for children; Frugalisms—Creative Ideas on Leadership in Facilities and Housekeeping Operations by Alan and Linda Bigger; and Infection Control for Dummies by myself. • The zero-District realignment, which will flatten the organization and make us better able to meet the needs of our members both now and in the future. As I wrap up my Presidency, I am thinking of an analogy of running a relay race. I am passing the baton to Marvin and the newlyelected officers and Directors-atLarge, and my advice is this: Run the race with all your heart, watch your lanes, and trust your teammates—the finish line will be there before you know it. Under our new structure, with the assistance of the new Directors-atLarge and the Association Office staff, we will strive to provide the necessary tools and support systems to the Chapter leadership, by giving them ready access to the materials they need to successfully lead their Chapters. 2. I would like to see a stabilization of our current membership through retention, as well as see a steady increase in the recruitment of new members. These recruitment efforts cannot be done at the Association Board or Office level alone—with everyone’s help, we can and will succeed together. 3. I believe that virtual Internet access is an integral key to the future success of I.E.H.A. We need to be available to meet the needs of facilities managers and supervisors globally, at the times that are most convenient for them. I want the I.E.H.A. Web site to be enhanced to make every existing educational program and networking opportunity easily available to members and potential members via the Internet. 4. I want I.E.H.A. to develop and offer quality online educational programs that can be an alternative to or a supplement to other educational programs that are currently being offered at Chapter meetings. These programs could be broadcast live, via the Internet, or be accessible as podcasts that could be downloaded to the global market 24/7. I come into this office humbled to have the opportunity to serve as the next President of I.E.H.A., and I am honored to be able to stand upon the shoulders of our past leaders who have so skillfully guided this Association to where we are today. We have a strong heritage and history that I wish to carry forward into the challenges of the new landscape that is ahead of us. It is because of the efforts and decisions made by our past leaders that I am able to stand together with you with great confidence that we have a bright future ahead of us as members of I.E.H.A.
