Executive Housekeeping Today - September 2008 - (Page 15) feature Aslett is looking hard today for new leadership that can sustain his company’s long and wellearned reputation and culture in the cleaning business—traditions that took a long time to establish. Aslett feels that professionals in the cleaning industry too often have a presence that is short on passion and production, no matter what the job or its benefits. Employees’ values seem to be regulated by the time clock—too many in the industry’s workforce have adopted an attitude of “getting through” (cleaning) to “get to” a higher position, a job with a better image and better pay. “My advice to others in the cleaning industry is to stick with the industry. This is a wonderful, educational, life-changing profession. We must bloom where we are planted and make our job and pay better right here, instead of always looking for greener pastures. A good, solid skill base in our industry is rare because so many people use it to step to ‘something better,’” says Aslett. “If we just stay alert as we do our work (cleaning those floors, beds, or toilets), we see a glimpse of life others miss at their ‘desk’ or ‘tech’ jobs. I also recommend constantly keeping a journal—we all come across/encounter techniques, ideas, inventions, and humor daily that will be lost if not captured immediately. Material like this can be put to good use later in many ways.” in the past, they have become allies and friends in order to better the industry as a whole. Aslett feels that the many professional associations within the industry, such as I.E.H.A., have really helped with this alliance effort. tq_exhouse3_4.5x7.5_6908:TQ-Husky “Different sectors share things now through networking that we article previously held private. Vendors, too, are more part of us, rather than ‘just’ salespeople. We’ve done a nice job of becoming one industry,” says Aslett. “Our biggest challenge now is to raise the consciousness of the public and 4.5x7.5 3_06 owners. One of the trends he is most pleased with is the growing unity of purpose and direction between all in-house cleaning operations and contractors.
