Executive Housekeeping Today - September 2008 - (Page 18) don aSlett (continued from page 16) sional cleaning to the attention of the public across the country. 3. He’s presented 10,000 radio and TV segments, newspaper and magazine interviews, workshops and seminars, and keynote speeches, most of these on cleaning and maintenance. 4. His company, Varsity Contractors, has pioneered a presence in the industry, turning cleaning into a culture of wholehearted pride and fun. They have developed and shared hands-on, humorous cleaning events, such as the janitor rodeo, janitor Olympics, janitor fashion shows, vacuum drag races, and even a janitor opera. These and numerous other spirited and publicity-garnering activities have helped to bring cleaning out of the janitor closet. 5. Varsity has created a corporate university for training management and frontline cleaning specialists, called Varsity University, which includes both a physical and virtual campus. 6. The company has also taken the idea of a standard operating system further with Varsity’s Jan-Ops system to service building facilities. 7. Aslett has built many businesses from spin-offs of the service business—mail order and retail sales of cleaning products, information, new technology, and new cleaning tools—even a cleaning museum and library! 8. One of the spin-offs Aslett has fostered is a software company that created VEKTR™ operating software to help service contractors and building maintenance professionals manage work orders, periodic tasks, and quality inspections using the Internet and handheld PDAs. 9. Aslett has implemented inventions that bring professional cleaning secrets to the home. 10. To highlight the legacy of the cleaning industry, Aslett has Architect’s drawing of the Museum of Clean. Once completed, the clock tower will flush instead of chime! undertaken the creation of the Museum of Clean. Construction of the 75,000-square-foot building is underway—a LEED Platinum hopeful—that will house a historical look at cleaning from the beginning of time, plus interactive learning centers to entice children to find the fun and rewards of cleaning. “I’m ever thankful for the capable, generous, and reliable folks who surround me in my businesses,” says Aslett. “Together we’ve done a great many things, and I look forward to the many, many more on the horizon. I’m probably proudest of the simple fact of having been a professional cleaner for half a century—I’ve stuck it out—lived and breathed the ‘religion’ of clean for more than fifty years now! The real reward is the daily lift from doing something that counts, and nothing counts more than being involved in a livelihood that improves people’s quality and quantity of life.” W Don Aslett is the Founder and Majority Stockholder of Varsity Contractors, Inc. (since 1957), author of 42 books, partner in Don Aslett’s Cleaning Centers and Live-Right LLC, and owner of Marsh Creek Press publishing company. He may be reached by calling (208) 232-3535.
