The CIMS human resource standard is important in that studies have concluded that worker turnover in our industry is up to three hundred percent. From formal hiring practices to management and cleaning, personnel training is imperative to recognizing all the costs attributed to the turnover of just one employee. Training has become the most effective means of reducing turnover and improving morale. How many times is a new employee told to just go and find the janitor’s closet and stay busy? In today’s business world, that is not the way to distinguish yourself or your organization. The difference between a janitor and a custodian is training. And the definition of a custodian is to serve as the protector of the facility’s assets. The human resource section also provides management with a clear understanding of timekeeping and payroll and helps to document all necessary tax forms. 4. The next section, health, safety, and environmental stewardship, is timely, as it addresses current concerns in our society. Cleaning for Health and Green-certified products are both hot topics. When executivelevel managers can document their understanding of these issues, it becomes a benefit to the entire organization. When that documentation becomes part of the CIMS-certified mission, it is invaluable as a sales tool. Further, as a commitment to these concerns eventually becomes the culture of the organization, terms such as OSHA, MSDS, PPE, and DFE are easily recognized for what they represent. 5. Management commitment is the fifth and final section. Here, all managers can identify the level of commitment their own organization has made to the CIMS stan- dard. If there is a true commitment at the very top of your organization, it will become readily apparent thru scrutiny of this section. Management commitment gives clarity to the mission, vision, and values of the organization. Here, organizational flowcharts, job descriptions, etc. are required and provide answers when employees ask, “Who am I in this company?” “What exactly is expected of me?” or “ Who do I report to specifically?” Although these queries sound remedial, oftentimes these concerns are overlooked or just not important enough to be formally documented. Contract cleaners can use the same areas to improve their corporate mission as well. Benefits to both in-house service providers and contractors can include reduced workers compensation risks and claims, reduced worker turnover, improved morale, better training programs, thorough and accurate documentation practices, possibly reduced insurance premiums, improved customer relations, and better internal communication. As managers, the mission is to constantly improve. When we look at each of the above areas as opportunities to improve our organizations, it becomes clear that CIMS is a viable business tool that has extreme value. Overall, if implemented, CIMS can and will improve any cleaning organization. As a manager, CIMS becomes your everyday partner to help put out those everyday fires. Sometimes before they start.
