AH&LA’s McInerney Raises Hotel Industry Concerns at ADA Hearing Washington, D.C.—AH&LA President and CEO Joe McInerney delivered comments at a U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) public hearing on the recently proposed changes to the Accessibility Guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). AH&LA expressed concern with a number of provisions in the proposed changes and filed formal comments in August outlining the association’s concerns. “Our members have spent billions of dollars in the last 16 years complying with the ADA’s requirements,” stated McInerney at the hearing. “It would be highly unjust to require hotels that in good faith complied with the current standards to spend millions more to immediately retrofit their presently compliant facilities to meet more stringent requirements when the Final Rule is issued.” McInerney’s comments specifically addressed these lodging industry concerns: Presently compliant guestroom bathroom and single-user restrooms; accessible room dispersion; barrier removal; hotel reservations; qualified small business safe harbor. McInerney’s July 15, 2008, full hearing comments can be read at www.ahla.com, under the “Press Room/Official Press Position Statements” tabs. 24 Executive Housekeeping Today/September 2008 http://www.jointcommission.org/PatientSafety/NationalPatientSafetyGoals/ http://www.jointcommission.org/PatientSafety/NationalPatientSafetyGoals/ http://www.jointcommission.org/PatientSafety/NationalPatientSafetyGoals/ http://www.ahla.com
