While, 46% of respondents were not certified and 4% were other, 28% have earned their C.E.H. designation and 22% have earned their R.E.H. through I.E.H.A. Interestingly, based on these survey results, it was found that R.E.H.’s make, on average, $29,000 more a year than C.E.H.’s—an increase of $19,000 per year over last year’s Salary Survey! Characteristics of Facilities As previously stated, the majority of respondents work in a hospital (40%), while 12% work in another kind of healthcare facility, bringing healthcare’s total to 52%. The second highest number of respondents work in a college or university, totaling 13%. In addition, 10% work in a hotel/motel, while the remaining respondents (25%) work in other types of facilities. (Refer to “Participants Facilities” graph to the right.) Of all the respondents, 53% stated that their department’s operating cost had increased this year, while 28% stated theirs remained constant and 19% said that theirs decreased. In regards to their department’s annual turnover rate, the average of all respondents was 13%; however, responses ranged anywhere between zero and 90%. In addition, the most common turnover rate given was 10% and 45 respondents answered that their department had a less than 10% turnover rate. When respondents were asked about their cleanable square footage, the majority of respondents (40) said that they are responsible for 100,000-500,000 square feet. Fourteen respondents stated that they are responsible for under 50,000 square feet; 25 stated they are responsible for 50,000-100,000 square feet; 30 stated between 500,000 and one million square feet; and 19 responded that they are responsible for over one million square feet. Interestingly, based on these results, it was found that the average salary steadily increased by about $10,000 for each category surveyed on square footage. For the 2008 Salary Survey, the Association Office chose to add some additional questions involving the new EHT virtual magazine, Green cleaning, and international employees. Of the respondents, 81 stated that they prefer the print version of EHT, while 35 responded that they prefer the virtual version, and 15 chose not to respond. In addition, 55% of respondents stated that they have implemented Green cleaning procedures at their New Results facility, while 37% have not, and 8% did not respond. Examples of Green cleaning procedures that respondents have implemented at their facilities include using Green cleaning products, recycling, using energy-efficient light fixtures, and using reusable microfiber products (as opposed to paper products). In regards to international employees, on average, respondents have 11 international employees in their department; however, responses ranged anywhere between zero and 300. Countries represented by international employees included India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Mexico, Lebanon, Jamaica, Korea, Ethiopia, Romania, Russia, Puerto Rico, Peru, Japan, China, Italy, Cuba, Colombia, and Guatemala, among others.
