Executive Housekeeping Today - October 2008 - (Page 2) executive corner A Message from Your Incoming President: I am truly honored and humbled to have this opportunity to serve as the 34th President of the International Executive Housekeepers Association. For me, this is the highlight of a 28-year journey that began in 1980, when, as a young man starting in his career in housekeeping management, I joined NEHA (the National Executive Housekeepers Association). I recall the excitement of the officers and members of the Philadelphia Chapter who had just returned from the 50th anniversary Congress that had been held in the birthplace of this Association—New York City. It was the excitement exhibited by those people that made me want to return to the next Chapter meeting. A renewal of that same kind of excitement about IEHA is what’s needed today. With it, people will again desire to attend our annual Convention and come to our local Chapter meetings. In the early years of my career, many of the skills I learned and used in my job came from resources that were provided by this Association. Early on, I obtained a manual written by Charlie Miller and published by NEHA that guided me in setting up and managing a hospital i TEAM Success! Mar vin Ellsworth, REH IEHA President housekeeping department. A few years later, I met Charlie and his wife, Sherry, and we became good friends. IEHA has allowed me to make so many good friends along the way—friends who have helped, mentored, and encouraged me in my professional career, as well as in my IEHA journey. This Association has also given me the ability to further my education in housekeeping management through the completion of the 330-hour course, which led to my becoming certified (CEH) in 1988, and then registered (REH) in 2006. As some of you may know, I’ve had the pleasure of serving on the Association Board of Directors on two separate occasions. The first time was from 1992 to 1996, and it was during those years that we changed from being a national organization to an Association that now includes members from around the world. From 2006 to the present, I’ve served as the President-Elect. Having had these two unique opportunities has afforded me the privilege of participating in early discussions and conversations about many of the changes and advances that we have seen implemented over these recent years.
