Executive Housekeeping Today - October 2008 - (Page 22) ExECutiVE CornEr (continued from page 2) It certainly has been a pleasure to be involved with the immediate out-going officers and directors. This group worked as a united team that believed that IEHA needed to change and were willing to take the risks necessary to make it happen. Under the leadership of Darrel Hicks, this board pressed forward in the quest to set the groundwork for the new future of IEHA To each of these individuals, I offer my sincere thanks. But where do we go from here? If you’ve ever been to a professional football game, you know that when the home team plays, the stadium fills with people who have come to watch their team play the game. Throughout the game, though, no matter how much or how loudly the spectators cheer for their team, the game can only actually be won or lost by the TEAM that’s playing on the field. It’s easy to sit in the stands, or even at home, and be a Sunday afternoon quarterback, but there’s nothing that the Sunday afternoon quarterback can do or say that really has any effect upon the team’s chances for victory. It is true, however, that the outcome of the game is a direct result of how well the actual football TEAM plays the game. Under IEHA’s new structure, the Board of Directors will be much like the coaches of the football team. Directors will be assigned to specific Chapters that they will coach and support. They will give direction to the Chapter leadership and will provide them with the tools necessary for success, but ultimately it’s what the Chapters (the TEAMS) do with those tools and support that will determine their success. We can win and we will win if we choose not to be spectators, but instead to be a TEAM that is operating together in unity with a strong desire to succeed. Our Chapters are the backbone of the Association. My desire is for our Chapters to grow and to be effective within their geographical areas. We will provide support to our Chapter Presidents, Chapter Membership Chairs, and Chapter Education Chairs, by giving them what they need to build and maintain strong, vibrant Chapters. We will work to stabilize our current membership and create incentives to recruit new members. While some things can be done from the Association office, member renewal follow-up and recruitment of new members are most effective when they’re done at the Chapter level, by the actual Chapter members. In addition, we will provide virtual access to our members. This component is critical to the future success of IEHA We strive to meet the needs of facilities managers and supervisors around the world. Everything that IEHA has to offer its members will ultimately become available via the Internet, including our Self Study Program and testing. We will continue to develop and provide quality, online educational programs. These programs can be used as an alternative to, or as a supplement to, other educational programs that are already being offered at Chapter meetings. Over these past 78 years, IEHA has come a long way, but the future of our Association is very bright and the possibilities are endless. I stand together with this new Board of Directors, thanking YOU—our members—for placing your faith and trust in us, and giving us the opportunity to lead this great Association over the next two years. I pledge to you that we will not let you down. Thank you.
