By already having executive housekeeping experience and on the job practice in Green programs, you all are already ahead of the pack—but a continuing education certificate or graduate degree in sustainability will help ensure your future involves leading your building in helping make the world a better place. The nature of the courses and training available may make proximity to the college or university a considerable factor in choosing your program or school, but don’t rule out the opportunities available online. Online meeting technology has increased the number of classes and types of classes available in a virtual environment. Also, some training and certificate programs are offered where the trainer or educator travels to your place of business for group training certificate opportunities. To fund your courses, begin by investigating your place of employment. Many businesses will partially or completely fund continuing education courses for their staff. There are also numerous grants, low-interest loans, and scholarships available for those seeking to enhance their knowledge in sustainability practices. If you do decide to continue your education, I wish you the best. Then, shift the focus from what happens in the building for cleaning to what you have provided for cleaning in the janitor closet.
