Getting employees involved with the process will enhance the “buy in” by those involved in the program. • Choose your cross-trainers and trainees carefully: Evaluate trainers and trainees to determine who has the best skill sets and abilities to perform the training, and select trainees who are adaptable and flexible enough to absorb new skills. • Evaluate the program: During the program, request feedback and modify the program as needed. Once the cross-training has been completed, have the trainers and trainees provide feedback about what they have learned and how to improve the program for the future. Facilities and custodial managers are constantly being asked to do more with less and to stretch their resources. It is becoming increasingly important that employees at all levels in an organization be flexible and adaptable to the changing environment. The more that a custodial employee knows about all facets of custodial operations, the more valuable the employee’s skill set becomes. Learning new skills and how to perform different tasks enhances the ability of a person to move upwards in an organization. Some examples of cross-training that may enrich an organization: • Have supervisors oversee different buildings, not just the ones that they may be used to overseeing in the past.
