Executive Housekeeping Today - November 2008 - (Page 28) What IEHA Has Done For Me “The most important thing IEHA has done for me is providing cost-effective educational opportunities. I plan on becoming a CEH, and that will help me climb the ladder!” -Jason Green Director of Environmental Services St. Joseph Convent Campbellsport, WI inside IEHA Congratulations to Hiroko Quinn: IEHA’s 2008 Unsung Facility Hero Award Winner! In conjunction with International Housekeepers Week (September 1420, 2008), IEHA selected Hiroko Quinn, an employee of Top To Bottom (a building maintenance services company) in Lawton, OK, as the 2008 Unsung Facility Hero Award Winner. Charles Hall, the President of Top To Bottom, nominated Quinn for this award. “During her time as an employee at Top To Bottom, Quinn has shown excellent qualities in employee relations and teamwork. In addition, she is the type of employee who takes her job seriously and performs beyond the expected job description. She makes Top To Bottom a better company due to her actions and performance,” says Hall. Hall’s nomination letter identifies a specific example where Quinn revealed her heroism and dedication to her job. “Last year, as Hiroko was performing her duties, she noticed a fire in the basement of the facility she was cleaning and had the foresight to notify the proper authorities of the hazardous condition. She was working in a paper mill with bales of paper, loose paper, and pulp everywhere, which could have resulted in a very dangerous situation and a great loss of resources, or even death of employees.” In addition, Quinn has worked for the Comanche County Memorial Hospital for over 28 years. When Hall was Director of Housekeeping at CCMH, Quinn worked for him for 11 years, progressing from housekeeper one, two, and three, and up to group leader. Quinn presently works three jobs in the cleaning industry and has been awarded certificates in safety, chemical usage, hazardous waste, and infection control over the years. According to Hall, Quinn has not missed a day of work in the seven years she has been working for him at Top To Bottom, including holidays when covering Republic Paperboard Co., LLC of Lawton, OK. Quinn was one of several candidates nominated for this year’s Unsung Facility Hero Award contest. She will receive a year’s membership to IEHA, a certificate of appreciation, and a $200 cash bonus. IEHA would like to thank all those who nominated a pool of very qualified candidates for this award. What has IEHA done for YOU lately? On June 16, 2008, the Utah Chapter held a graduation ceremony at the Intermountain Medical Center Doty Education Center for 17 students who attended classes and are now members of IEHA. Twelve of the students received their certification as Certified Executive Housekeepers, and classes were held every other week for eighteen months in order for them to complete the 330-hour program. The class was facilitated by Phyllis Loos, Utah Chapter President. Environmental Services Managers, Human Resource Managers, and Environmental Services vendors all participated in teaching the classes. The Chapter feels that it was a great experience facilitating these classes for a group of people who were excited to learn, and feel very fortunate to have this many motivated people from Environmental Services teams. Attention IEHA Members Do you know any up-and-coming employees in the cleaning industry who aren’t current members of IEHA? For example, it could be a supervisor in your department, a janitor at your children/grandchildren’s school, a colleague, a friend, etc. If so, we would like to know them! Please send their name and contact information to excel@ieha.org. Thank you! 28 Executive Housekeeping Today/November 2008
