The symposium was the first of its kind for the cleaning industry, and there were about 50 people—including end users, vendors, and longtime industry gurus—in attendance. Besides excellent networking opportunities, attendees enjoyed a day and a half of insightful seminars that informed them on how ICM will both unify and elevate professionalism for the cleaning industry. “This was one of the best educational seminars I’ve ever attended because we didn’t have talking heads,” says Bob Powitz, PhD, MPH, RS, DLAAS, Forensic Sanitarian. “Everybody who presented had something very important to say, and the ICM model is great because it doesn’t lock us in; it allows the cleaning industry the freedom to change.” For those of you who haven’t heard, ICM is an open source unified-systems approach to institutional and industrial cleaning, validated by measurement, and uses measurement as a product and process selection, enhancement, and validation tool. During the event, end user attendees also participated in an ATP swabbing contest to see who could get the highest count, and the winner was IEHA President Marvin Ellsworth, with a count of 2,931 after swabbing the women’s restroom toilet. In addition, IEHA held a drawing for a free registration to their 2009 Convention, which was won by Bill Slezak of Rubbermaid Commercial Products. “I’ve gained a lot from attending this symposium,” says Everett McDonald, CEH, Housekeeping Director at the Greater Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky Airport. “I’ve been in this industry for 34 years, and I’ve been to a lot of seminars like this, and this was by far the best. The people here have given us the ammunition to talk to our bosses in an educated way.
