Executive Housekeeping Today - December 2008 - (Page 18) FEATURE ARTICLE (continued from previous page) and retention. We need to come up with strategies that are effective for the growth and development of our Association. In addition, we need to continue to address the concerns and needs of our membership and look for opportunities to strengthen our Association. Lastly, I believe our Web site will continue to be a great resource as everyone becomes comfortable utilizing everything it has to offer. The IEHA Social is a great tool for communication and sharing success stories.” as well. As a BOD, I will personally be doing this, and I encourage others to do it as well.” Michael Patterson, REH, Director-at-Large Debra Archbald, CEH, Director-at-Large “I believe that our new organizational structure still has a period of settling to go through. However, I am encouraged by the positive comments and abilities most Chapter Presidents have displayed, and quite a few have offered to assist in this process to a successful end. The primary issues discussed are retention and numbers in attendance at Chapter meetings. I always say and stand by my feeling that leadership is the key, and you have to work at it for it to happen. Chapter leaders and members need to have the desire to take the Chapter to the next level. Change will have to be tried in meeting content, times, places, and the leadership. Our vendor members can also be a great help outside in the marketplace because they work with many people in the industry. Encourage them to bring information on IEHA membership and talk about the Association when they visit clients. It’s also a good idea to contact non-renewing and renewing members alike, to either encourage their renewal, or thank them for one. It’s also a good idea to call and thank REH/CEH renewals “I would rate the organizational change as very successful. The Chapter Presidents for which I have oversight have been appreciative of the one-on-one contact, as well as our group contact. It appears that this change may be the spark that ignites the Chapters. I have found that recruitment and retention are at the top of the list of Chapter President issues. In order to resolve, first, I plan to discuss having coordinated Associationwide monthly membership drives with the Association Membership Committee and Senior Leadership Team that will target specific industries as an on-going recruitment effort. Second, I plan to investigate the possibility of setting up IEHA Collegiate Programs in the cities where the Chapters operate, which will serve as feeders to the Association and Chapters. Third, I have requested that Chapters contact non-renewals and encourage to renew within thirty to sixty days after their membership has expired.” tend meetings. In some instances, the distance between members is a major impediment. Weather conditions and costs (gas prices, shrinking family budgets, etc.) are also seen as problems contributing to the lack of attendance. I also think that a Chapter can gain much success by having a relationship with the executives who oversee their executive housekeepers. For example, the Hawaii Chapter holds an annual Bosses’ Night in order to strengthen their relationships with the top executives at their members’ facilities. I think that this event is a stroke of genius and should be implemented by all Chapters because this one event pays returns to the Chapter throughout the year. I think the BOD and the Association as a whole should do everything they can to assist the Chapters in building positive relationships with their members’ bosses. We need to start managing upward.” Diana Ronning, CEH, Director-at-Large Tom Jones, REH, Director-at-Large “The flatter organizational structure should prove to be much more responsive to the needs of the Chapters. The Chapter Presidents’ opinion of the change has been largely positive. However, the most talked about issue among the Chapter Presidents is getting members to at- “I believe that as a whole, this organizational change has been great. There are a few bugs to work out, but that is normal in any change. I would say that all of the Chapter Presidents that I have talked with are not only receptive, but excited about the personal communication they are now receiving from the BOD. Primary issues expressed by the Chapter Presidents are lack of participation by some Chapter members and the low turnout at Chapter meetings. At this point, what I am doing for Chapters who are experiencing these issues is partnering them up with other Chapters that are close to their area that do not experience these (continued on page 20) 18 Executive Housekeeping Today/December 2008
