Executive Housekeeping Today - December 2008 - (Page 2) executive corner Years ago, James L. Schorr, Senior VP of Marketing at Holiday Inn, presented the “Bucket Theory of Marketing”—a concept that (pardon the pun) still holds water today. In order to understand the theory, first imagine a bucket of water. In this bucket, water represents business; therefore, the more water, the more business, and consequently, the more revenue. In addition, also imagine a ladle, and that this ladle adds even more new business (water) to the bucket. The ladle represents everything that can be done to bring new business, or in other words, marketing. However, also imagine that the bucket has a hole in the bottom of it and out of that hole flows all the customers who will not return. The size of the hole in the bucket is determined by the level of service offered and the willingness of the company to practice service recovery when something goes wrong. Schorr’s point of this theory is that the smaller hole in the bucket, the more water the bucket will maintain, and less expenditure of time, effort, and money will be needed to keep the ladle operating. Schorr asks those in marketing where they would like to work—for a bucket with a large hole or a bucket with a small hole? Now, think about if we substitute the word “membership” for “marketing”—are we doing everything we can to keep the members we have? When Chapters receive notification of non-renewals from the Association Office, do we do y The Bucket Theory of Marketing everything we can to contact those former members and find out why they have not renewed, and convince them that continued membership with IEHA is in their best interest? It is even more important to find out why members leave. If a member is not engaged, does not come to meetings, does not communicate with other members, and does not participate in any of the educational opportunities offered by IEHA, then that member will ask themselves why they are paying good money to this organization, and they will drop out. Chapter boards should make every attempt to call (not e-mail) their members a week before meetings to encourage them to attend. Then a follow-up call should be made to those who don’t show up, to apprise them of what they missed. Then, follow-up with a copy of the handouts from the educational presentation, and also include a copy of the meeting minutes so they can see what happened in their absence. Personally, I am a believer that less is more when it comes to meetings, but make those meetings memorable. Four general meetings a year for many Chapters is sufficient, but ask the members what they want and need in those meetings. I do not know what precipitates members not to renew, but I know that for some, their employers believe their commitment to IEHA is a conflict of interest—and many of (continued on page 4) The official publication of the International Executive Housekeepers Association, Inc.
