Executive Housekeeping Today - December 2008 - (Page 7) mas” by Clement Clarke Moore or Henry Livingston. If you are not familiar with the story, visit: http://www.christmas-tree.com/ stories/nightbeforechristmas.html. It is realized that different cultures celebrate the end-of-year seasonal activities in various ways; however, this story transcends cultural and international boundaries as the element that is being missed and undervalued on a national and international level. So, here goes a wee bit of Irish blarney in some broken prose: “Twas the Night Before ” ‘Twas the night before, when all through the city, The lights were out and the scene was so pretty. The families were at home with their workday complete, While others were stirring and up on their feet. The kids and the parents had rested their heads, All snuggly and warm in their comfortable beds. While others donned coats, scarves, hats, and gloves, As they went out the door, to leave home was a shove. As they left their houses with the glowing lights, They went on their way through the darkening night. While others slept and dreamed dreams in their minds, These good folks left their homes and families behind. These folks left their homes and through the city they roam, To various locations, while the wind it did moan. Cold as they were, they had a warmth in their hearts, As they thought of their families all snug at their hearths. Each day, each week, and each month of the year, These honorable citizens bring forth much cheer, As they serve at their work with cloths, water, and steam, To keep our hospitals, hotels, airports, and colleges clean. These people bring honor and bring pride to our profession, And to each we often owe quite a serious confession. Housekeepers, janitors, and custodians we say, May your life be special and blessed every day. It is the night before tired, you drag in the door, Hang up your coat, place boots on the floor, To bed you go for your work is complete, Thank you each one, for your incredible feat. Thank you each one, for the values you bring, While outside the seasonal bells doth ring, It is because of your value and all that you do, That we are so richly blessed we’d like to say “Thank you!” In this day of demands for increased efficiencies, cost controls, and customer expectations, the Frugal Housekeeper and Housekeeperess would like to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to the greatest value element of all—you! The work that you do makes the world go ‘round and is incredibly special.
