We can see how much money was saved running the dishwashers at night instead of between lunch and dinner. As I have said numerous times before: “What gets measured gets done.” This will now be especially true. How soon can we expect largescale moves toward this redistribution of energy? Obviously, there are many reasons that this will take some time, but pilot projects are currently underway in places such as Austin, Texas and Boulder, Colorado. By the end of 2009, Austin Energy hopes to have completed its goal towards becoming the first utility in the nation to have installed smart meters in every home in its service area. They seem to be preaching what they practice—the utility received an award last February from Computerworld magazine for being a Top 12 Green-IT User for reducing energy consumption by IT equipment and using technology to conserve energy and lower carbon emissions. Austin Energy also offers an impressive menu of rebates, free tools, and other incentives for small and large businesses (and homeowners) seeking to make their energy consumption more efficient. u Stephen P. The magnet of a MRI machine is never off unless the MRI is taken down for a service issue (which almost never happens). When a floor must be stripped in the MRI room, it must be done by hand. Everything taken into the MRI room has to be non-ferrous metal or plastic (including bucket, wringer, mop handles). A person should not wear any metal (especially a watch), should not take a wallet (magnetic strips on credit/bank cards), and should be free of implanted medical devices. According to IEHA immediate Past-President Darrel Hicks, a worker at his facility recently got near the MRI room with a buffer, and it got pulled out of his hands and into the MRI magnet. It cost the hospital $100,000 to repair the magnet and for the lost revenue during the down period when it was out of service. “These are very powerful magnets and should be taken very seriously,” says Hicks.
