Executive Housekeeping Today - January 2009 - (Page 3) Start With the Seal: integrated cleaning & measurement There’s no question that cleaner indoor environments enhance the health and well-being of their occupants—testing proves as much. But executive housekeepers and facility managers must still determine the appropriate degree of cleanliness for any given situation, and choose the best products and methods to use. What products are most effective? How can maximum efficiency be realized in the cleaning process? The Carpet and Rug Institute started their Seal of Approval program as a way to address both residential and commercial users’ concerns about cleaning and maintenance. When the program started in 2004, independent testing found a wide variance in how well different cleaning solutions worked. Of the first 25 products tested, only four cleaned a soiled carpet sample better than water. Some caused the cleaned carpet area to resoil faster, and some products actually damaged the carpet’s color and texture. Based on the positive response to testing spot removers, pre-spray, and in-tank cleaning chemicals, CRI soon began evaluating vacuum cleaners, extractors, and cleaning systems (equipment and solutions together). t CRI Seal of Approval Offers Proven Effectiveness by Werner Braun carpet dyes and fibers, and must not contain optical brighteners that could cause color change.
