Executive Housekeeping Today - January 2009 - (Page 7) caring enough to make sure that I had a chance to have a meal with my son. As I was leaving the next morning, I was given a survey. One of the questions asked, “Would you stay at this hotel again?” and my answer was a strong affirmative. Thanks to the wonderful service of the clerk at the desk, not only will I stay at the hotel again, but I’ll have the opportunity to recommend it to someone who will be in Seattle soon. The clerk went the extra mile and she was a brilliant ambassador, not only for her hotel, but also for the chain of hotels she represents. The role of being an ambassador and the importance of that role was strengthened when I met with a group of business people from several international service companies. During the presentation, one of the speakers highlighted the role of housekeepers and custodians when it comes to being ambassadors for their company or organization. I’d like to expand on that thought for a moment and stress the incredibly important role that each of us has in our profession, no matter what it is, to ensure that we represent our companies or organizations in a positive light, each and every day. It is often the service worker who meets and greets people at a campus, hospital, or hotel. The service worker is often the last person a hotel guest sees before he or she goes to bed. In the morning, it is often the service worker a hospital patient sees in the morning, cleaning the room and preparing the space for the next day. The manner in which the service is provided is critical to the effectiveness and the image of any organization. According to the unabridged Webster’s Third International Dictionary, an ambassador is defined as “an official representative of a sovereign or state.” In other words, the ambassador represents their own country in the country to which they are assigned. Often, the ambassador is the most public presence of their country in the host country, and the population of the host country often sees and judges the ambassador’s country by the way that the ambassador speaks, acts, or even dresses. In order for the country to be accurately reflected to the host country, it is imperative that the ambassador be on his or her best behavior—by being careful with words, knowing about customs, and being fully aware that they are on duty all of (continued on next page) Quality assurance at your fingertips!
