Executive Housekeeping Today - February 2009 - (Page 18) Congratulations to Aaron Springs III: We are pleased to announce the winner of the 2008 Spartan Sponsored IEHA Scholorship Award—Aaron Springs, III, son of Aaron Springs, long-time member of IEHA! Springs is currently a freshman at Fayetteville State College in Raleigh, NC. His application letter stated: “Dear IEHA Spartan Scholarship Committee, As a freshman at Fayetteville State University this year, I have many goals I look forward to accomplishing. My overall goal is to graduate in four years with a strong understanding of the business world and continue my education at the graduate level. To achieve my goals, I would like to receive all the assistance available to me. The next ten years of my life are aimed strategically at obtaining an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and continuing my education at the graduate level to obtain a master’s degree in business. To accomplish this, I feel I have a solid foundation because of the many activities, events, and programs I have been involved in since middle school. Some of those activities involved sports that taught me discipline, being a part of organizations that developed my leadership skills, and various programs that enhanced my character and taught me to work well with others. Another goal I desire to achieve is to have little or no debt from college loans. The funds from this IEHA Spartan Scholarship would help me tremendously with my tuition. In closing, I believe that my prior experiences have prepared me to expand my goals and not limit myself because of being afraid of experiencing new avenues that Flushing the Toilet by Lauren Riggs Generally, people are thought of as consumers because we shop with the intent to purchase. We consume clothing, groceries, gas, and more; and we pay for it, too—with cash. As consumers, we even purchase water. Potable water is stocked in bottles in most retail establishments around the United States; it is also often found in our sinks, toilets, cooling towers, and other building systems. We consume potable water daily, though without paying for it in cash. Restroom facilities are an easy place to start when considering ways to reduce potable water use in building operations. If it is not already standard practice to use non-potable water (e.g., graywater) in your restroom facilities, start the process with a little research. Consider the following things: the type of water that is used, the frequency of facility use, sources for non-potable water, and the ways to integrate non-potable water into the building’s plumbing systems. Although the prospect may seem daunting, finding ways to reduce potable water use for building operations will help increase the amount that is left in natural water systems and, thus, available for other, more practical purposes. As we investigate ways to reduce potable water use in our restrooms, kitchens, and laundry areas, we open the door to other opportunities, such as using graywater in cooling towers and switching to high-efficiency fixtures and fittings. Implementing changes such as these can not only save water, but can reduce the longterm costs associated daily building operations. u Lauren Riggs is Coordinator for LEED Technical Development for the U.S. Green Building Council. To recap my goals, they are to: complete my undergraduate work, move on to graduate school, gain work experience through working as a manager or director in a business setting, and lastly, owning my own business. To be granted this scholarship would greatly assist me in pursuing my goals to become an asset to others.” A $1,500 scholarship, sponsored by Spartan, is awarded to the best qualified candidate as determined by IEHA’s Education Committee each year and the award is granted in the Fall. The Spartan Sponsored IEHA Scholarship Award is available to IEHA members and their immediate family members. Each applicant is required to submit an application, along with a letter briefly explaining why they are applying for the funds, what they are to be used for, and an explanation of their career goals. Applications and letters are due by September 10th of each year.
