Many of you have helped initiate and fine-tune Green cleaning programs within your buildings and make it part of your executive housekeeping plan. We read articles, attended seminars, and networked with others to help us increase our understanding and promote our efforts. And many of us are still at the planning stage, looking at similar buildings with successful programs as role models for our future plans. All of us should continue to look to these examples of Green cleaning excellence, for there will always be someone with a better program than our own. As in life, we do not want to compare ourselves to others as a method of determining our own success, but it is to our advantage to look to those that are successful in their own right; and gather ideas, investigate their hurdles, and use these peers as a benchmark of sorts as to where we wish to take our Green cleaning programs in the future. Due to legislation and sheer popularity, schools and universities were quick to embrace the Green cleaning movement, and they continue to raise the bar. of innovation, training, communication, and measurement. Due to the numbers of applications with outstanding accomplishments from universities, three honorable mention awards were given in this category. The 2008 Award winners were: • University of California, Santa Barbara: Winner • Michigan State University: Honorable Mention • University of Georgia: Honorable Mention • Western Washington University: Honorable Mention • Miami Dade College, North Campus: Winner • Colorado College: Honorable Mention • Jonesboro (AR) Public Schools: K-12 Winner • Oswego (IL) C.U.S.D. #308: K-12 Honorable Mention Not only do we want to celebrate these schools’ award-winning programs, but we should use their programs as case studies for all executive housekeepers. (continued on page 25) Award-Winning Green Cleaning The 2008 winners of the Green Cleaning Awards for Schools & Universities, sponsored by the Green Cleaning Network, Healthy Schools Campaign, and American School & University magazine can serve as helpful case studies for all executive housekeepers improving or beginning a Green cleaning program. Winners were recognized in three categories: universities, colleges, and K-12 schools and districts. One winner and one honorable mention were chosen from each category. I was initially very pleased by the 25 percent increase in submitted applications alone.
