Winners across the board introduced innovative products, such as Greener cleaning chemicals and janitorial equipment, that helped them reduce, or eliminate, chemicals all together. They also expanded their use of color-coded microfiber products. Strategies to eliminate floor stripping were introduced, drastically limiting one of the most hazardous cleaning procedures. Paper products that demonstrate higher quality and reduce consumption are now used, and packaging has been reduced. These examples of building an actual process in your program, where all elements of your executive housekeeping duties can be analyzed and altered, help reduce environmental impact by using innovative products, equipment, and procedures. and shown on public television. Some began addressing their contractors, requiring them to convert to Green cleaning. Measurement Training We all know that without proper training, any housekeeping efforts will suffer and not be successful. This year’s winners used documented training sessions, structured programming, listened to input from cleaning personnel and building occupants, provided multi-lingual training, and utilized even more strategies to improve their programs. Their commitment to training is quite evident, and will be a foundation to their everimproving Green cleaning efforts. Communications I have said quite often, that what gets measured gets done. This is especially true, and especially challenging, in Green cleaning. As executive housekeepers, we are faced with the hurdle of finding objective measurements to gauge our effectiveness. While we undoubtedly will be seeking standardized objective cleaning industry metrics, the winning schools and universities are leading the way, using tools such as custodial management software, PDAs to assure quality, ATP meters, cleaning standard certifications, and more to make their measurement procedures more effective. I know that all of you as executive housekeepers can appreciate the innovation and initiative demonstrated by the Green cleaning programs of these schools and universities. I also hope that you all will learn lessons from their contributions, try them yourselves, and think of your own ideas as well. While we are taking great strides in really making a difference, it is good to see our learning institutions showing the way as to how we can make the world an even better, healthier place through a dedication to Green cleaning. u A 26+-year veteran of the cleaning industry, Stephen P. Ashkin is a tireless advocate for environmentallypreferable cleaning. Often referred to as the “father of Green cleaning,” Ashkin has played a pivotal role in setting industry standards, promoting environmentally-preferable products, and advocating socially-responsible practices. All occupants of the buildings were taught through effective communication efforts on how the decisions they make has an impact on the way the rooms and buildings are cleaned, and therefore, on the health of occupants and the environmental impact of the school as a whole.
