Executive Housekeeping Today - February 2009 - (Page 7) ployers need to be able to link the candidates that we interview and eventually employ with the environment in which they are going to work. Diane Sarah Begin, a Canadian human resources consultant and strategist, stated, “A culture is as important to an organization as a set of wings to an aircraft. They are both prerequisites to creating the dynamics required to reach new heights. Making culture count secures the journey.” (www. hrsbconcepts.com) Thus, if we are to be successful in hiring new employees who will “reach new heights,” we need to ensure that during the interview process, we ask questions that will enable us to determine the characteristics and values that will help the candidate to fit in with the culture of our organization. We need to ask ourselves up front what the drivers and values of our organization are so that we can successfully communicate these to the candidate. In an article titled “The importance of understanding organizational culture,” Debbie Schachter stated, “Understanding the culture and, as required, changing it, can mean the difference between attracting and retaining good employees and driving away the best employees with an environment that doesn’t encourage, challenge, and reward them.” (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/ mi_m0FWE/is_6_9/ai_n13822461/ pg_1?tag=artBody;col1) A clear understanding of organizational culture and aligning the culture of the organization to the interests and drivers of the job candidate can increase the probability in hiring a new employee who will be successful in the organization. So what types of questions could an interviewer ask that may help him or her determine if the candidate has the aptitude or values to function in the culture of the employing organization? The following are some questions extrapolated from an article titled “The 25 most difficult questions you’ll be asked in a job interview,” by William J. Morin and James C. Cabrera that may assist the job interviewer to separate “the wheat from the chaff.” • Tell me about yourself. • What do you know about our organization? • Why do you want to work for us? • What can you do for us that someone else can’t? • What do you look for in a job?
