Utah Skyline Recreation Guide 2009 - (Page 25) Bring the family and discover the Hidden Treasures of Utah in Kanab Photo courtesy: Barry Glazier Kanab is the home to more than 70 Hollywood Western movies filmed since 1945. Families can discover the hidden treasures of Utah with a trip to Kanab, where they can witness firsthand some of nature’s true gems. Legend has it that Montezuma’s Treasure may still be buried near the Southern Utah town of Kanab. The actual treasure rests in the outdoor activities and natural wonders that surround this Southern Utah community. Kanab has plenty of history, including the distinction of being home to the first all-women town council in the United States. Kanab enjoys a rich Western Movie history too. Kanab also boasts modern comforts like a 9-hole golf course surrounded by redrock cliffs, a family swimming complex known as the Cowboy Water’ n Hole. Visit the quaint theater that hosts plenty of Cowboy Poetry, a host of eateries, gift shops, public parks, numerous WiFi locations, and hiking trails, along with lodging options to fit every need. Kanab is conveniently located near a host of spectacular destinations, including a quick 45-minute drive from Zion National Park. The red rocks of Bryce Canyon have inspired visitors for years and are just over an hour from Kanab. The Grand Canyon is clearly a natural wonder and the North Rim is much cooler and has fewer tourists than the southern rim and only about a one-hour drive. Kanab is also home to Best Friends Animal Society, the largest no-kill animal sanctuary in the nation. Kanab is only about an hour from Lake Powell, a perfect water-filled getaway destination. Families can rent personal water craft on the 2nd largest man-made lake or schedule a float trip down the Colorado River. Movie executives dubbed the title “Little Hollywood” on Kanab for hosting more Western Movie productions than any place outside of Hollywood. Frontier Movie Town is located in downtown Kanab and owns many of the old movie sets and offers free tours. Bring the entire family and experience the wonders of nature in Kanab. www.visitkanab.info Kanab, Utah Info (435) 644-2534 www.visitkanab.info Kanab is considered to be a central hub for Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon and Lake Powell.
