Utah Skyline Recreation Guide 2009 - (Page 3) Utah’s ‘Life Elevated’ provides the perfect playground for families Photo courtesy: Michael Barton Utah was originally named ‘Deseret’ until it became the country’s 45th state in 1896. Utah’s setting provides families of all sizes a contrast in playgrounds of striking rock formations, like those found in Goblin Valley State Park. Utah is a place where all’s well that ends well and love’s labor is never lost; the duality of human nature reveals itself under starry skies at the Tony Awardwinning Utah Shakespearean Festival in Cedar City; a festival conveniently set at the gateway to southern Utah’s National Parks. Each park has a unique look and history. Their playgrounds provide children of all ages thousands of places to play. This is a place that takes a family or the solitary traveler from the cerebral to the physical in a matter of moments. Utah’s various recreation areas offer youth contrast to what tends to be the norm in our technology-driven lives. Blazing, brilliant red rocks formed by wind, water, and sun have shaped a landscape for millions of years becoming more beautiful with age. Complex formations of plateaus and colors, cathedral-shaped buttes and rocky cliffs are immense geological libraries of endless variety. Utah is home to 5 national parks, 7 national monuments, 2 national recreation areas, and 42 state parks. In the north, Middle-Rocky Mountain peaks rise above 13,000 feet and provide a backdrop for camping, hiking, fishing, mountain biking, rock-climbing, whitewater rafting, boating, and other recreational opportunities. To the south and east is the expansive Colorado Plateau with its red rock slot canyons, gorges, hoodoos, dinosaur dig sites, and Utah’s national parks. No other state offers a more diverse or a more wild experience for the family.
