Okay, here’s the scoop on the creation of the small archway tunnels that your car will pass under on the way to Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks. Red Canyon is located in southern Utah on the Powell Ranger District, Dixie National Forest. The canyon is bisected by a ﬁve-mile long segment of Utah’s 120-mile Scenic Byway 12, and is considered the natural pathway onto the Paunsaugunt Plateau. This awe-inspiring drive through this vermillion-colored canyon is the western gateway to the Byway and sets the stage for some of southern Utah’s most breathtaking scenery and rich history. During the summer of 1924, J.W. To secure funding for construction of a road to Bryce Canyon, Humphry wanted to impress local dignitaries by carving two tunnels which created a gateway to the fairyland of Bryce Canyon. On June 1, 1925 Humphry’s vision became reality when the Red Canyon tunnels were completed. As you drive through this remarkable corridor, stop at the Red Canyon Visitor Center and learn more about the geology, ﬂora & fauna, local history, and great recreational opportunities that abound here. Come hike, bike, or ride the trails and imagine what it might have been like to pursue Butch Cassidy through these twisted side canyons, or just enjoy getting away from the maddening park crowds. There are trails you can hike and not see another soul for the entire day or just simply enjoy immersing yourself in the red, the green, and the quiet.
