Kids are naturally drawn to the history and folklore of castles and dinosaurs, and both are very plentiful in Utah’s Castle Country, which is located right in the middle of the state. Dinosaurs and the famous San Rafael Swell are the cornerstones to the area’s long list of outdoor attractions and alltime favorites of kids and families. The “Swell” is well-known for its scenic geologic wonders, sandstone, and one-of-a-kind rock formations. Kids may not be as aware of the very signiﬁcant local dinosaur discoveries. From the mountains to the desert, young visitors can bike, climb, camp, ride ATV’s, horse’s, and more. Mountain lakes feature ﬁshing, canoeing, boating, and skiing. Desert attractions surround the Swell, which is centrally located along I-70 in the heart of Utah. A host of Utah State Parks are found in Castle Country and feature events ranging from water-ﬁlled-fun at Huntington Reservoir to rocks galore in Goblin Valley. The region is loaded with spectacular museums. College of Eastern Utah’s Prehistoric Museum is home of the Utah Raptor and Huntington Mammoth. Two halls comprise the bulk of the museum, the Hall of Man and the Hall of Dinosaurs, each hall has two levels and features a spectacular view of Castle Country. Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry is also open to the public. Young visitors can uncover their own pottery shards or dig for dinosaur bones at the Discover Area. The Helper Mining and Railroad Museum has exhibits from the late 1800’s to the 1950’s and is located in a 1914 hotel. Native American rock art is plentiful in Nine Mile Canyon, which is home to thousands of ancient pictograph and petroglyph drawings imprinted across the canyon walls.
