Utah Skyline Recreation Guide 2009 - (Page 35) Check out the natural wonders and colors of the Grand Staircase Photo courtesy: Barry Glazier The GSENM is named for the many layers of rock formations that ascend to form ‘stairs’. Kids and adults will never run out of things to do on one of the nation’s largest playgrounds on Utah’s Grand StaircaseEscalante National Monument. The Grand Staircase was named for the geologic formations that resemble a staircase with the chocolate, vermilion, white, gray, and pink cliffs that form the “stairs” and ascending varieties of rock formations. This huge public playground consists of over 1.9 million acres and more than 3,000 square miles of Utah public lands, which are managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Families will not likely exhaust the complete list of things to do and see on the GSENM in one trip to Utah. There are slot canyons to visit with 200-foot high cliffs and narrow openings that can often be reached from side to side with each of your outstretched arms. Check out the seashells that dot the landscape and indicate a time when the entire region was under water. There are slot canyons to explore, and a natural arch known as Grosvenor Arch. If you like water falls, you won’t want to miss Calf Creek Falls and the majestic colorful and water-filled rock formations that create these natural falls. Visit one of the visitor centers on GSENM as each visitor center has a distinct scientific topic. The Kanab visitor center chronicles the history of the rocks, land, and people. The visitor center in Cannonville focuses on the Pioneers and Native Americans who made their home on what is now the Grand Staircase. The Big Water center is dedicated to the some of the most recent dinosaur discoveries in the world and visitors can see a number of actual bones of newly named dinosaurs found only on the monument. GSENM is one of the scientific wonders of the West and showcases oneof-a-kind educational, recreational, and multiple-use trail system opportunities for visitors to enjoy. Check with the visitor center for details on road conditions and permits to visit backcountry locations. Visit www.ut.blm.gov/monument for further information.
