Dinosaur Discoveries are abundant in Utah Photo courtesy: GSENM Utah is the home to many of the most recent new Dinosaur discoveries in the world. It’s a fact, dinosaurs have become as much a part of Utah’s claim to fame as its fabled snow and red rock canyons. For over 100 years, paleontologists have combed this bone-rich state for the fossil remains of these awesome prehistoric beasts. And they’ve never been disappointed. Some of the richest deposits of dinosaur fossils in the world occur here including the world record holder for largest number of large carnivorous dinosaurs ever found at a single site (Cleveland Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry near Price). You’d think with all of the searching and digging that has gone on that all the bones would have been found by now, right? Far from it. In fact, the last ten years have seen a renaissance in Utah’s dinosaur paleontology, with dozens of new species found, mostly in the Moab, Price, Green River, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument areas. Bizarre rhino-like forms with numerous horns, armored tank-like species, plant eating raptors, large cow-like plant eaters and a T-rex-sized crocodile are just a few of the new ﬁnds that are rewriting dinosaur paleontology. Most of these ﬁnds are coming from rocks dating to 70-120 million years ago, near the end of the dinosaur age. Known as the Cretaceous, this chapter in earth history saw Utah change from a relatively dry continental interior to a low lying coastal area covered with steamy tropical jungles and teaming with life. Dinosaurs were abundant the entire time and their fossils can be found almost anywhere the right age rocks are exposed. Virtually all of the new species found from near the end of the dinosaur age (70-80 million years ago), including new kinds of tyrannosaurs and raptors, come from Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument where a team of researchers has been working in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management for over ten years. With so many new fossil species to ﬁnd and describe, its no wonder that paleontologists consider Utah one of the most exciting places in the world to work.
