Kids and families can become part of history with a visit to Zion during the Centennial celebration in 2009. Zion National Park is the oldest and most visited national park in Utah. Zion will have a year-long birthday party and everyone is invited as Zion will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2009. Zion was established as Mukuntuweap National Monument by President William Taft on July 31, 1909. Mukuntuweap means “Straight Canyon” in Southern Paiute language. Nine years later in 1918, Mukuntuweap National Monument was renamed Zion National Monument and one year later Congress established Zion National Park. During this centennial year, visitors to Zion National Park and the surrounding area will have the opportunity to take part in several very special events which will occur only during this 100-year anniversary. Centennial celebratory events include a 10K Fun Run down Zion Canyon Scenic Drive in April, special Ranger-led Programs from April thru October 2009, the 100th Anniversary Ceremony will take place on July 31, 2009, and a walkthrough the Zion - Mt. Carmel Tunnel is slated for August 2009. Zion has been preserved as a sanctuary and an inspiration to many with some of the most spectacular scenery on earth. With over 5,000 feet of vertical relief, Zion enjoys a great diversity of plant and animal life. There are plenty of family-friendly trails for hikers of all ages and ability. Kids love Canyon Overlook, Emerald Pools, Taylor Creek, Weeping Rock, Riverside Walk, The Narrows, and the Parus Trail. Visitors to Zion will enjoy the free shuttle system that will deliver you to all of the main attractions in Zion Canyon. Multiple shuttle busses service the canyon loop and return to each stop about every 10 minutes from early morning to late evening during the summer months from April to November.
