Utah Skyline Recreation Guide 2009 - (Page 9) The North Rim of the Grand Canyon - America’s Backyard Photo courtesy: Jenny Taylor Hallisey Grand Canyon is one of the most visited and well known National Parks. Brighty of the Grand Canyon is the well known classic children’s book and served as the first introduction to the magnificance of the Grand Canyon for many kids and adults. A statue is dedicated to the loveable burro and boldly displayed in the Lodge on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The gift shop also has an assortment of Brighty items. The North Rim receives much less visitor traffic than the South Rim. The South Rim is well known for the desert climate and terrain. On the other hand, the North Rim is heavily forested with pine, spruce, and fir trees along with breathtaking wild flowers only found at higher elevations. As the crow (Condor) flies, the two rims are only separated by 10-miles, but the trip by vehicle from rim to rim is over 200 miles. The North Rim receives heavy amounts of snowfall. The road and all services in the park are closed to vehicle traffic from October to May. At this time, the park is only accessible by snowmobiles and cross–country skiers. The Park Service opens the road to the North Rim each year in mid-May and wraps up the season in mid-October. Lodging is available in the park and in surrounding areas. There are a number of trails on the North Rim including the well-known and paved Bright Angel Point trail, which is just a short walk from the parking area or Grand Canyon Lodge. Rangers provide a host of kid-friendly talks with topics such as California Condors that have been reintroduced to the wild. Many condors make the Grand Canyon their home. Catch a glimpse of these very large and magnificent birds that were near extinction not long ago. The views of the night sky are a favorite of families as they can see the stars free from city lights that often obscure the natural view of the stars. Mule and horse trips are available. The North Rim is a must see destination during a visit to Utah. Keep in mind that Arizona DOES NOT observe daylight savings and is an hour earlier than Utah in the spring & summer months.
