The 20 Rising Stars of Hedge Funds 2008 - (Page 10) A Matter of Supply and Demand Despite a negative start to the year, a shortage of experienced talent should cause compensation to rise yet again By Jon Jacobs, Staff Writer, eFinancialCareers.com C OMPENSATION FORMULAS TIED to short-term investment returns make hedge funds one of the most lucrative and glamorous corners of the financial world. They also make pay highly variable, even among professionals who perform the same function at different fund companies. Matching pay to current returns makes it difficult to forecast year-over-year pay trends. While both base salaries and bonuses posted single-digit percentage increases last year, negative returns for January and February of this year don't bode well for this year's compensation. On the other hand, both the behavior of the markets and decisions made by myriad portfolio managers could paint an entirely different picture by Christmas. 10 HEDGE FUND RISING STARS Underlying Trends In general, hedge funds pay better than investment banks. This applies not just to the professionals managing portfolios, but to those in a gamut of sales and support functions as well. For example, hedge funds' operations and accounting staff earn 20-30% more than they would at investment banks, according to George Yulis, a former principal in the executive search group at Rothstein Kass. A survey by the firm found total compensation for senior accountants at hedge funds ranged from $96,000 to $124,000 last year. In coming years, both cyclical and secular forces may widen the fund industry's compensation premium over banking. Wall Street profits are getting battered by the credit crunch, compressing bonus expectations for 2008. Moreover, hedge fund assets are swelling faster than the pool of candidates with hedge fund experience.
