The 20 Rising Stars of Hedge Funds 2008

By Mark Malyszko Institutional Investor News’ second annual issue of 20 Rising Stars of Hedge Funds showcases up-and-coming hedge fund managers, advisors, analysts, consultants and traders who are likely to impact the global hedge fund markets going forward. Nominees are submitted by professionals throughout the hedge fund industry and are vetted and selected by the business publishing staff. The selected individuals meet the criteria of having demonstrated expertise, dedication and consistency in their careers, indicating they will likely be the trendsetters of the future. This year’s winning nominees manage, co-manage or support portfolios of assets ranging in size from just under $25 million to $35 billion. The focus of their investment portfolios ranges from energy to healthcare, and their services range from retirement to wealth management. Their strategies include asset allocation modeling, long/short investing and quantitative risk management. The winning nominees generally have a positive view of the industry, predicting an increasing degree of institutionalization among hedge funds and greater dominance by larger funds in the future. Several also said it will be important for hedge fund managers to devise strategies that allow them to stand out as the market becomes more intensely competitive. Other noteworthy points about our Rising Stars: • 50% are founders or co-founders of their own firms; • 30% are based outside the U.S., spread among five different countries; • The only city concentration is New York with 30%; • 15% are chartered financial analysts and 10% are certified accountants; • 15% hold a juris doctorate degree, 10% have an M.B.A. and one has a Ph.D.; • Their average age is 37 (the youngest being 28 and the eldest being 44). Selecting the final 20 Rising Stars was a difficult task, as many outstanding individuals were nominated. We would like to thank the nominees and those who nominated them for making this list possible, and we look forward to charting the professional progress of our Rising Stars in the years to come.
