CHRIS ADDY President and Chief Executive Officer Castle Hall Alternatives, Montreal Age: 38 Education: University of Durham, England (B.A. in Economics) Mentors: Ian Davidson, Retired Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers Bermuda; Mario Therrien, President of Tactical Alternative Investments, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec Addy launched Castle Hall, a provider of operational due diligence, in 2007. As president and CEO, he oversees a team that assesses the quality of a hedge fund’s operational controls - including accounting, compliance, infrastructure and technology - on behalf of institutional investors, fund of funds and family offices with a combined allocation of more than $20 billion to hedge funds. Addy said it is his job to figure out what can go wrong, noting that this is important in a climate where some hedge funds fail because of weak controls. “Our clients know their business depends on good operational due diligence,” he added. For example, hedge funds are becoming more conscious of the control environment that surrounds the pricing process. Some issues in pricing are accuracy and independence when there is third-party outsourcing, which Castle Hall evaluates. “We speak with both the hedge fund manager and the service provider,”Addy said, adding that this includes determining who does the pricing. Addy began his career as an auditor with Deloitte & Touche in the United Kingdom before joining PricewaterhouseCoopers in Bermuda in 1994, where he became lead manager in the firm’s investment company audit group. He said a challenge for him has been making the leap as an entrepreneur and described his career as progressive and a cumulative series of choices. “As the industry evolves, there will be increasing consciousness that running funds is not just a talent, it’s a business,” he added.
