The 20 Rising Stars of Hedge Funds 2008 - (Page 20) director in charge of business development in April 2007. In that role, she is responsible for building custom solutions for clients that include public and corporate pension plans, funds of funds and foundations. “Graham globally trades and manages more than 70 different underlying alpha engines, which we bundle into a variety of products,” she said. “I sell Graham’s products to the institutional marketplace.” Graham Capital offers discretionary and quantitative alternative investment styles, including macro, relative value, equity long-short and arbitrage strategies trading in global fixed income, equity, foreign currency and futures. The firm’s strategies are aimed at absolute and riskadjusted returns while maintaining a low correlation to traditional asset classes, as well as other hedge fund strategies. “The biggest challenge is taking the complexity of the strategies we manage and translating them into solutions for our clients, ultimately creating alpha within their portfolios,” Ancker said. Prior to Graham Capital, Ancker was a principal and director of marketing and investor relations at Stadia Capital, a long/short equity hedge fund she joined in 2003. She said becoming a partner at Stadia in 2006 is her greatest accomplishment because it was a huge honor to be celebrated by her employer. Ancker, however, said her best boss is Ken Tropin, founder and chairman of Graham Capital. “Ken is a definitive leader, uniting and inspiring the team of 180 professionals within Graham to continuously challenge ourselves each day to produce a firm with best-in-class attributes,” she added. From 1996 to 2003, Ancker was with Atalanta/Sosnoff Capital as a quantitative research analyst, a fundamental research analyst and later a director of marketing for alternative investments. “I didn’t find the hedge fund industry, it found me,” she said. “Six months into my role as an analyst at Atalanta/Sosnoff, we launched a long/short equity hedge fund.” Prior to that, she was a research analyst in the Economic & Resources Consulting Group’s oil & gas division at ICF Kaiser International. In 10 years, Ancker said she plans to be managing assets at a ‘best-inbreed’ hedge fund like Graham Capital and expects hedge funds will become more institutionalized. She added that she admires top endowments like Harvard Management and the Yale Endowment for moving beyond traditional stock and bond portfolios into alternative investments. Ancker serves on the Connecticut Hedge Fund Association’s board of directors and co-chairs the local chapter of the Peer Advisory Council for Marketing and Investor Relations of 100 Women in Hedge Funds. She also is a board member of Hedge Funds Care, a charity devoted to preventing and treating child abuse. 3.
