PAUL ECKEL fixed-income trader at Moore Capital from 1991 to 1992 before leaving to become an independent hedge fund consultant until 1996.He returned to the office as a marketer at Rotella Capital from 1996 to 1997 and then joined Fletcher Asset Management, where he was also a marketer until 1998. Eckel said he got into the hedge fund industry when he moved from Seattle to New York to work with Caxton Corp., the firm he most admires, adding that he plans to stay in the industry.“Hopefully,I will have interests in a handful of hedge funds that Emerging Manager helped to graduate from the emerging manager space to the $1 billion-plus assets under management level,” he said. As far as the industry goes, Eckel expects no slowdown over the next decade.“Most likely there will still be a full spectrum of hedge fund launches in terms of assets under management, from the $3 million ‘friends and family’launches to the megabillion dollar launches,” he said. 5. PAUL ECKEL Dooley, a chartered financial analyst and CFA Institute member, credited McCormick with giving him “the entrepreneurial mindset to take an idea and develop it into a business.” He said his greatest accomplishment has been his ability to successfully implement continuous improvements. “When I was a junior in college, already enamored by the stock market and investing, I read a biography on George Soros and his experiences running The Quantum Fund,” he said. “At that time, I decided that managing my own hedge fund was my career aspiration.” Prior to starting Fusion Capital, Dooley worked at Blue Vase Securities, now BenchMark Financial Network, which he joined in 2000. He said the sale of Blue Vase to ING Securities gave him the opportunity to start Fusion Capital. “Over the next decade, I see myself continuing to develop and grow Fusion Capital Management,” Dooley said, noting that this will include the launch of additional funds. “I’m a big fan of never resting. I’m not going to look at my successes and be happy with them.” As for the industry, he foresees a continuation of institutional assets branching outside traditional long-only management and into hedge funds and other strategies focusing on absolute returns. 22 HEDGE FUND RISING STARS Founder Emerging Manager, New York Age: 42 Education: University of Washington (B.A. in Finance and Business) Mentor: Ray Kurzweil, Founder and Chief Investment Officer, Kurzweil Capital Eckel founded Emerging Manager in 2004 to provide capital raising and operations/ fund launch consultation to new and established hedge fund managers.
