The 20 Rising Stars of Hedge Funds 2008 - (Page 29) arrive at work, you must have a view on the market and its impact on your portfolio as investor capital, as well as your own capital, is at risk,” Plaut said.“This can only be accomplished via diligent attention to fundamental and technical considerations and keen risk management.” Prior to joining Sanno Point in 2006, Plaut was a managing director at Bank of America Securities in both New York and London.Beginning in 1999,he held various leadership and senior credit analyst positions, including heading global financial institutions research and covering the technology and retail sectors. He also was head of European high-yield, strategy and special situations research. From 1993 to 1999,Plaut was v.p.for emerging market corporate and sovereign credit research, which included aiding in long/short trading. From 1992 to 1993, he was a research analyst at UBS and, from 1989 to 1992, an associate in fixed-income research at JPMorgan Securities. Plaut believes the credit crunch presents a unique opportunity for hedge funds going forward.“The dislocation in the credit markets presents an opportunity for hedge funds to profit from the forced selling of leveraged loans by banks that are capital constrained,” he said.“Indeed,we are able to buy loans in the 70 to 80 price range that will likely trade back at par within the next 12-18 months, providing one of the best investment opportunities in many years.” He added that, in 10 years, he hopes he can retain “significant skin in the financial markets.” Mentors: Rihan Ahmad, Partner, Anew Capital Management; Steve Furnary, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, ING Clarion; Jim Hennessy, Former Chief Executive Officer, ING Funds; Tim Lovell, Chief Financial Officer, Liability Solutions; Kevin Mathews, Portfolio Manager, F&C Asset Management Sahai started Anew Capital Management in late 2006 and is the portfolio manager of the Anew India Opportunity Fund, an opportunistic long/short India-focused fund that primarily invests in equity and convertible securities. “One of my greatest accomplishments has been building and maintaining strong relationships over the span of my career,” she said. “Most recently, their encouragement and assistance were of great help as I set out to start the Anew India Opportunity Fund.” After assessing where higher risk-adjusted returns could potentially be produced amongst asset classes and markets, Sahai launched the Indiafocused convertible bond and equity fund. The strategy aims at leveraging the higher growth rate India has to offer vis-à-vis the developed markets while providing attractive risk-adjusted returns through the use of convertible bonds, she explained. Prior to starting Anew Capital, Sahai was the portfolio manager for the convertible portfolio at ING Investment Management, which she joined in 1997. Before joining ING, she was head of Indian research sales in Hong Kong with Marlin Partners, a London-based institutional stockbroker. She joined the firm as an Indian equity analyst in 1994 and helped develop the research product and methodology for analyzing Indian companies. “When I was given responsibility for managing the convertible portfolio at ING in 2002, the portfolio was underperforming and I was told I had six months to turn it around,” Sahai said. “We proceeded to reduce risk in the portfolio and devised a disciplined process around the portfolio construction.” In addition, she developed and leveraged strong relationships with the sell-side to gain an informational edge that is crucial to success in relative- ly inefficient markets.“Within six months,we turned the portfolio around from a fourth quartile performer to the No. 1 fund in its category,” he added. While continuing to focus on India, Sahai would like to assist and help develop other emerging managers, who she calls the rising stars of their times.“Over the next 10 years, emerging markets will develop and become a dominant force in the global economy,” she said.“As a result, we will witness a significant shift in the existing investor base to these markets from the developed countries.” 15.
