Prior to joining Manulife, Hoch was vice president of product management for variable annuities at Putnam Investments. Prior to Putnam, she worked at Keyport Life Insurance, as well as Fidelity and Guaranty Life Insurance, in the product, marketing and operations areas with a focus on fixed income and variable annuities. Hoch described her greatest accomplishment as leading the re-launch of John Hancock’s Web site. That nearly year-long project, which culminated in June 2006, has received industry honors from organizations such as the Mutual Fund Education Alliance. “We have seen tremendous success,” she said, adding that a good Web site is all about interfacing and being able to communicate. Indeed, John Hancock’s new site includes single-click access to information such as performance and allows investors to create fund-tracking lists. “If you have a millisecond of someone’s attention, you have to know how to engage them,” Hoch said. “Communication touches everyone.” She noted that the industry will face increasing pressures to make various platforms work, and good e-commerce will be an important factor. Hoch credits Matthew Shipman, now a consultant, for bringing her to Manulife and said he was her best boss. “He felt very passionate about marketing,” she said, noting that she did not specifically set out to be a marketer. “But if I didn’t like it, I wouldn’t be doing it.” Hoch said she enjoys the business and hopes to stay involved. “I’m hoping that in the next five to 10 years, I’ll continue to leverage my talent and help different people,” she said, adding that she most admires John Hancock as a company. “There’s really no other company that I would go work for right now.” 12.
