Demand for top-of-the-line consumer goods, services and residential properties has not slackened, according to companies catering to affluent purchasers. In fact, buyers recognize that high-quality products in all luxury categories can also be excellent investments that maintain their value and offer potential appreciation in the future. Here is a closer look at the state of the market for luxury goods, services and real estate. I nvestments in luxury goods are turning out to be the best hedge against an economic downturn, as well as the most enjoyable. Around the world, successful hedge fund managers and other financial executives are continuing to amass more than enough wealth to fuel the luxury goods and services industries. Rising demand for luxury automobiles, yachts and business aircraft has been a boon to such manufacturers as Aston Martin, BMW, Cessna and Embraer, which are expanding international operations. Camper & Nicholsons, with more than 230 years of designing and building the world’s most acclaimed yachts, has seen continued growth in its orders for superyachts more than 24 meters long. “The bigger the better,” says Sara Montefiore, general manager of Camper & Nicholsons USA in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. “The large yachts are always the first to sell.” The company started 2008 with an order book of more than 900 superyachts due for delivery in the next four years, the highest level ever, according to data from Thomson Financial.
